Transport of goods from England to Belgium
Documents necessary to move to Belgium:
After Brexit, moving from the UK to Belgium requires completing the Transfer of Residence procedure in order to avoid paying import VAT (21% of the total value) on the property transferred to Belgium.
As the Ban Trans team, we strive to make the entire moving process easier for you and for this purpose you will need to prepare the following documents:
• Copy of ID card or passport;
• A certificate issued by the local government in Belgium confirming your place of residence, or if an EU customs agent agrees, then you only need to present a document confirming that you are an EU resident or intend to become one;
• A detailed bill of lading with the value, size and weight of each item listed;
• British residence certificate or other evidence that you have lived in the UK for at least the last 12 months (e.g. 12 months of council tax bills or bank statements showing your address);
• A declaration to the customs authorities that you have used the household items at your usual place of residence in the UK for more than six months and that you will not sell, rent or pawn them once you receive them in your new place, and that you intend to remain an EU resident for at least one year.
• Signed authorization for the customs clearance agent to act on your behalf.
Print and sign all required documents and have them ready for the driver before collecting your property and, for safety, also send them electronically.
What if you cannot provide a certificate from a local office in Belgium or other documents confirming your place of residence or confirming your history of at least 12 months of residence in the UK? Then the Belgian customs agent may allow you to collect your items in Belgium if you pay a deposit, which is usually approximately 30% of the value of the imported goods (as declared on the consignment note). This will give you six months to prepare and deliver all outstanding documentation to customs authorities. The deposit will be refunded by the Belgian customs office once all formalities have been completed.
Another important document is the CMR form, which our driver will provide you to complete on the day of the move.
To speed up this process, you can contact your local customs office in Belgium.
